Bug Out Bag
A bug out bag is also known as PERK or Personal Emergency Relocation Kit.
Many survivalists consider these to be the first level of preparedness because of its overall usefulness. Usually packed in duffel bags and/or back packs they can be thrown into a vehicle if one is available or carried if a vehicle is not.
It’s hard to imagine what type of emergency would warrant a bug out bag. But I’ve seen many movies where they would have come in handy. All right, so it’s unlikely that aliens will invade the earth or massive tidal waves engulf the land, but it does pay to be prepared never the less. The kit should be compartmentalized so it can be readily modified to suit the situation. You may wish to start with a duffel bag. Rather large, granted. I couldn’t carry one very far, but it could ride in my car trunk easily. Another alternative would be a large back pack that you could tie a sleeping bag onto. In the largest bag pack the warmth and shelter items:
- Sleeping bag
- Thermal blanket
- Mylar blanket
- Large towel
- Hooded Jacket
- Tent
- Tarp
- Socks
- Underwear
- Gloves
- Solar powered radio
- Self powered flashlight
In the next bag you’ll want to pack: - Lighter
- Compass
- Knife
- Hand saw
- Multi-knife
- Notebook
- Pencil
- Toilet paper
- Mirror for signaling
- Whistle
- Insect repellant
- Sunscreen
- Rope
- Water Filter
- Water purification tablets
- Needle and thread
- Safety Pins
- Fishing hook and line
- Large plastic garbage bags
- Collapsible cup
- Money
- ID
- Rubber bands
Food Items: - Bottled water
- Hard candy
- Power/energy bars
- Slim Jims
- Bags of nuts
- Dark chocolate
- Peanut Butter
- Dried fruit
- Powered drink mix with electrolytes
In another container make your first aid kit:
- Prescription medicines
- Band-Aids
- Gauze pads
- Telfa pads
- Tape
- Pain relievers
- Multi-vitamins
- Antibiotic cream
- Razors
- Lip balm
- Rubbing alcohol
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Aloe vera ointment
This is by no means the ultimate list. Everyone’s bug out bag will have things you feel you need while leaving out the things you don’t feel are worthy of space in your kit. Some people prefer to carry dried food and cooking equipment. I’m trying to keep it light.
