Bullying

What Qualifies As Bullying?

It is the intentional, threatening/hurtful serial mistreatment of someone who can or doesn’t defend themselves.

Writing a page about this topic was never on my radar earlier, but with today’s technology there are new ways to bully people, without even having to face them. Some susceptible victims are driven to harm themselves- even commit suicide. I’ve read a lot about this subject and I believe it to be closely related to domestic violence. Not a good idea to marry a bully- male or female!

Types of Bullying:

Physical:including harming someone in anyway or taking/destroying someone’s property. Obviously I could make a long list, There probably more ways than I can think of.

Verbal: which could include name-calling, threatening, teasing, humiliation and harassment.

Social: such as harming relationships, reputations with gossip. Causing someone to be banished from a group.

Cyberbullying: using digital technology such as texting, email or social media websites to harm someone or their psyche/spirit.

Handling Bullying

Your brain is the most powerful weapon, Dr.T. (a.k.a. Terrance Webster-Doyle) tells us. He also coins the phrase: mental self defense. I like it. Of course bullies are working on our brains, also. You have to use your brain to decide on what route to take to end the abuse.

Walk Away / Refuse to fight Just keep walking- hopefully you’re not walking toward the the offender. I don’t believe you would usually not be respected for this. Refuse to get pulled in. Ignore threats

Try Humor This is probably only going to work the first time. Agree with an insult, just blow it off and don’t let yourself raise your voice- which is the desired response.

Stand up to the offender This may work, you’ll have to judge, unfortunately it could backfire if you display any fear or doubt about your abilities to defend yourself.

Scream This is not the most heroic way out, it may not be as bad as what you’re trying to avoid. I believe what we’re trying to do here is to startle the offender so we can make an escape.

Report it Call the police. You know the number. If happens to a student at school contact the principal/superintendent, the State School Department, primary care physician.

Fighting Stance This will indicate that you know a Martial Art.. Let’s hope you do. Seriously, the study of a Martial Art is beneficial in many ways. Not just a physical standpoint, but, more importantly, a physiological one. A worthy teacher would cover areas such as avoiding conflict if possible first. Sometimes just knowing you have the ability kick some butt will give you the confidence to stave off having to use you skills, which, yes I know, can be disappointing in itself. We have to be satisfied with sparring in class and in tournaments.

Studying a Martial Art or attending a self defense for women course really enhances one’s ability to deal with bullying as well as many other aspects of life.
