Financial Abuse

Financial abuse is yet another form of domestic abuse.

Economic domination, as it is also called, is meant to isolate a woman into a state of complete financial dependence. The objective is to totally control his partner by taking away her access to money, mobility and choice.

While many victims are coerced into quitting their job and staying home and not earn any money, some still hold jobs- even good careers- but hand their checks over to their abuser. In return they are given just enough cash to get through a day at a time and still have to account for every penny.

Economic dominance occurs within all financial stages, ethnic backgrounds, age ranges and educational levels. It is usually used in conjunction with emotional, verbal and eventually physical abuse.

Signs of Financial Abuse

  • He controls the finances
  • He withholds money
  • He withholds credit cards
  • He gives you an allowance
  • He makes you account for all you spend
  • He steals or takes money from you
  • He confiscates your assets
  • He uses your assets for his personal benefit
  • He withholds basic needs like food, clothing, medications, etc.
  • He prevents you from working
  • He sabotages your job
  • He takes your pay check
  • If you recognize any of these signs in your relationship, you may be a victim. This could escalate until you are physically hurt. You need to seek help immediately. If only a few of these signs are apparent it should be easier to get out now before he has complete financial control.
