Home Security

The front line defense for your home security should be to deter break-ins.

Not just when you are home, but also when you’re not- it’s not good to come home and realize you’re not the only one in the house and your family isn’t home.

Here I’ll share a few ideas to help you and your loved ones and your belongings stay safe at home.

First don’t let it look easy to break in your home. Take a look at all ground level windows. It should not be easy to get up to them to look inside. Plant thorny shrubs or even cactus under them. The would-be intruder will have to stand in these while trying to break in.

Close the drapes- not just the sheers- so he can’t see in. If he can’t see your valuables to steal or can’t see if someone is home he’ll be less motivated to break in. You can also apply a safety coating on the glass to make it harder to break.

Install motion detectors in private areas that no one else should be in. Sure, motion detectors are handy in the driveway, but very effective in the back or side yard. If a guy is trying to be sneaky one of the last things he wants are bright lights announcing his presence.

If your yard is fenced in, lock the fence securely with a lock that is not easily accessed from the outside. Dogs inside the fence are great deterrents. The barking alone will drive a lot of intruders away along with the prospect of possibly getting bit. Just don’t have a doggy door for them. That’s just another breach point.

The door going out to the inside of the garage should always be locked. You may forget to close the large door one day- or watch it close all the way. I know I have. I hate that feeling when you get home form running errands and the garage door is wide open- opps!

If you have a sliding patio door make sure that is it correctly installed. If the glass doors are installed backwards so the sliding part is on the outside track the intruder can lift out the panel and enter. Use a pole in the inside track to jam the door closed. Make sure it fits tight.

Install multiple locks on the doors for effective home security. All locks are not created equal. The better ones are generally more expensive and more difficult and time consuming to install. Talk to a locksmith for the best information.

Get an alarm system if it is financially feasible. Start a neighborhood watch. Getting to know your neighbors and letting them get to know you is a great alarm system in itself as long as everyone knows the procedure. The street signs alone can provide some deterrent to the intruder looking for an easy mark.
