Keys
Keys play a big role in self defense. They can get you into safety quickly and lock out threats. Following these guidelines can help keep you safe.
Do not put any identifying markers on your key chain with your name, address or phone number. It does help to have unusual features on the chain so that you can identify them if you lose them.
Use detachable key rings so that it’s easy to quickly separate your car ring from your house ring when leaving your car at the garage for repairs. Don’t carry your them in your wallet- even if it comes with an attached ring. If you lose your wallet or it gets stolen, they will not only have your cash, but your address as well as free access! When buying a used car consider having the locks changed. I’m guessing the previous owner may have made a few spares. Anytime you move into a different home, same rule applies! If they are stolen or missing, again, it would be a good idea to change your locks. When having spares made, never let them leave your sight. Stand and watch the process. Conceivably the technician (or whoever they got running that machine-it's not rocket science, I did it myself at one of my high school jobs) could make a copy, given enough time and a little privacy. Remember a remote control garage is the same as a key. It’s best not to leave it in the car. If the car gets stolen, they can find your address in the glove box and have access to your home. Whenever you are approaching your home or car have your keys in your hand ready to go! Don’t get to your car and start rummaging around for them, particularly if you have bags in your arms, or you’ll be a prime target. I know some women who carry their keys so that they stick out between their fingers ready to use in a self defense situation! Always leave spare keys with someone you trust totally. This would be helpful if you locked yourself out or you went on a vacation and needed someone to watch the house for you. Never hide a spare in an obvious place like in mailboxes, flower pots or- heaven forbid- under the welcome mat. A diversion safe would also be a good idea. There are many styles available. Some are great for hiding valuables inside your home, also!
A flower pot diversion safe and a rock diversion safe.
A Kubotan makes an unusual key fob for your key ring. It’s easy to find in your bag or coat pocket and can be used as a self defense weapon, also!
Guard those keys well! Your safety depends on it!
