Personal Safety

Developing and improving personal safety should preclude the necessary use of self defense. The goal would be to minimize the need for such skills. Yes, you definitely need to be able to defend yourself, because even though you may do everything right, dangerous people may still threaten you.

Let’s hit the obvious (DUH!) stuff first. Don’t put yourself in a compromising situation- even to save time/energy/hassle.

Ya, you could save yourself walking three blocks if you take the shortcut through the dark-they are rarely well lit- alley, but couldn’t you use the exercise?

You could avoid that annoying neighbor on the forth floor who always gets on the elevator when you do, if you take that back unkempt stairway- hey, don’t you watch any movies? The exercise thing doesn’t apply here.

Ah, yes the parking lot-or worst- garage. Now here bad things do happen! Ladies don’t make it to their cars and are not seen again- alive. Walking to your car alone would not be a good idea, but if you insist:

Have correct keys in hand and ready, perhaps on a kubotan key chain. Another handy item to have handy is a personal alarm.

Scan entire area visually

Listen for noises whose sources you don’t see-something behind that vehicle.

Check out your car from a distance as you walk up,watch for vans with sliding side doors parked next to itget in on the other side.

Are the doors all locked- just as you left them?Look in the back seat and on the floor. But wait, problem solved! A nice gentleman who is concerned for your safety has offered to walk you to your car and even carry your bags! Wrong answer! If a nice unfamiliar gentleman offers this it is time to get an official escort! Even if it is the mall security Barney Fife!

But what if someone points a gun at you and tells you to get in his car? NEVER GET IN THEIR CAR! Think of the condition abducted women are found in- if they are found. I would rather take a chance of being shot- in the back as I run- that is if he had the guts to actually shoot.

If somehow you are in a potentially dangerous position and you feel you are being “interviewed” to be a victim, always keep eye contact, never look away. Be prepared to implement the responding techniques you’ll find here. Remember personal safety is front-line for self defense.

Always remember to exercise good judgment for your personal safety. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your loved ones. They will appreciate it.
