Pressure Point Self Defense
Pressure point self defense can be very effective for women. In general nature has given us less body mass and, therefore, less strength than our male counterparts.
Initially there was a valid reason for this. Males were originally built for hunting and protecting and females for nurturing and, of course, bearing children. At any rate there is no arguing that there are many fundamental differences between men and women. Thank God!
That doesn’t mean a woman can’t defend herself against an aggressive male or two; she just needs to be prepared.
Pressure point self defense begins with being familiar with all of the pressure points. Not all are available at all times. Depending on the attacker’s attire and proximity a woman's choice may be limited. A woman may find herself in a situation where she’ll need to strike a pressure point to escape, she’ll need to act quickly and decisively. She will only have enough time to strike once or twice, so she’ll need to make each blow count.
Conditioning and practice will greatly increase a woman's speed and accuracy, thus, improving her chances of using pressure point self defense effectively. Some methods can be performed alone and some with the help of a partner.
The first method involves a tennis ball suspended from the ceiling. Practice striking the ball, but no so hard as to send it swinging wildly. Strike with knife-hand, fist or palm strike. Strike with rapid succession. When your accuracy has improved start adjusting the height of the ball to represent various pressure point targets and heights of attackers. Practice kicking techniques on lower heights also.
The next method involves a suspended heavy bag. If you don’t have one ask a friend to hold up a laundry bag filled with crumpled newspapers. You can stick small pieces of masking tape on the bag at different intervals for accuracy practice. Remember to use hand strikes for higher targets and kicks for lower targets. While kicking head high is an admirable skill, a hand strike is faster and should the attacker snatch your foot during a head kicking attempt you’ll find yourself in worse trouble than before.
You’ll need a partner and a broomstick or long dowel padded on one end with foam or a towel secured with tape. While your partner moves the stick around practice aiming hand blows and kicks at the center of the padding. Increase the speed of the stick as you improve.
If you have hand held padded or boxing gloves, your partner can use these in this last exercise. Have him hold is padded hand in any location as you face your body away. Turn your head to visualize the target, then turn back and throw the blow with out looking. This method can be helpful is you imaging being chased or attacked from behind.
The effectiveness of pressure point self defense is enhanced greatly just be being prepared. Even if you never have to use it- I hope you don’t-but think of the confidence you’ll have knowing you can defend yourself and your loved ones.
