Target Focus Training
Origin
Target Focus Training was created by Tim Larkin. With his extensive experience in combat sports along with some military training, he was commissioned by the Navy to craft an effective hand-to-hand combat system for the Navy Seals.
For the last 25 or so years he has taught self defense to elite military special forces and law enforcement as well as corporate and civilian clients around the world.
Concept
Target focus training focuses on two issues. First to be able to differentiate between what Mr. Larkin calls anti-social aggression and asocial violence. Anti-social aggression is his term for avoidable violence, such as someone picking a fight with you and you can talk your way out of it or walk away from it. Asocial violence refers to the rare situations When violence is inevitable and you will need to respond with violence or face the consequences of injury or even death.
The second issue TFT focuses on techniques to injure the offender to the point of being nonfunctional by either breaking bones or rendering a sensory system (sight or hearing) unworkable. This is a no nonsense method. I agree with this conception. I’ve seen many the movies where the fight is over and the bad guy is laying on the ground- seemingly out. The good guy starts to walk away at BAMM! Out of the blue the bad guy is up and running to surprise our hero- or just whips out a gun. This doesn’t happen with target focus training; the pretence to this system is to render the bad guy non-functional until you are gone or in a safe place.
Methodology
Students are taught to look at a number of structure targets- usually joints and other weak areas. The regions of the body that provide the most options are highlighted. Students are taught to throw their body weight, perhaps with a kick, heel stomp or forearm strike.
The research for this was done following sports medicine accidents as well as car accidents, etc. The students watch various videos of accidents and injuries to understand how the body breaks and what kind of force it takes.
The techniques taught are designed to incapacitate the aggressor to end an attack. The mindset is: employ violence as your ultimate survival weapon. Target focus training’s tag is: Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is it’s the only answer.
Learning
Weekend seminars are offered as well as a DVD series and online training. I always imagine in personal is better, but more expensive. You could move at your own pace with DVDs, and repeat what you needed to as you go.
In my opinion the target focus training concept is solid and great for a woman’s self defense.
