Traveling Safety
Always remember to exercise traveling safety during your trips.
Walk with confidence, head up- observing your surroundings- looking people in the eye. Don’t be distracted. Don’t wear head phones or ear buds, it simply broadcasts that you are virtually deaf to what’s going on around you. Carry a cell phone, but don’t text while you walk. If you are in unfamiliar territory find a nearby business to get directions.
Should someone offer to help, politely decline. Don’t wander off into dark and/or secluded areas, try to stay in busy, public places. Don’t flash wads of money or expensive jewelry. If you have to have a purse carry it close and if possible keep your wallet in you pocket. Should you be mugged, you’ve got the important stuff on your body. Be aware of the area by maps and plans. Spontaneity is great, but not only can you lose a lot of time figuring out at the last minute what you’re going to do, if no one knows your plans you be go missing a while before anyone starts to look for you! Carry the name and phone number of a reliable taxi service with you. When taking a cab, share it with a friend if possible. When booking a taxi by phone in public, try to say your name quietly so as not to be overheard. Use these traveling safety tips when using public transportation like a bus, train or subway. Know the schedule of the service. If at all possible have someone meet your terminal stop. Always wait on a well lit, populated platform or bus stop. Many subways and train stations now have security cameras. In a bus try to sit close to the driver and in a train sit in a busy compartment. Keep your bags and personal possessions next to you or under your legs. Know where the emergency cords or buttons are- hopefully within reach. If someone starts a conversation, never give out and personal information. If you feel uncomfortable change seats or consider getting off at the next stop, but only if it’s well lit and busy. Try to have fun while practicing these traveling safety guidelines!
