Winter Survival Kit

A winter survival kit should be packed in every car before traveling through or to cold weather country. It should be repacked every year to ensure fresh, unexpired batteries, food and safety equipment.

Besides keeping the winter survival kit in your car, you also need to winterize your vehicle. Make sure it is tuned up, has proper tire pressure, adequate windshield washer fluid and always keep a quarter to half tank of gas in it; you’re going feel pretty foolish if you run out of gas and get stranded. Gas stations may close during blizzard conditions. It is very important to have a cell phone with charged batteries with you at all times.

Vehicle supplies for your kit include:

  • Shovel
  • Windshield scrapper and brush
  • Chains or ropes
  • Road salt and sand
  • Booster cables
  • Tool kit
  • Road maps
  • Compass
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Blankets
  • A crank or battery powered radio/flashlight
  • Bright colored scarf or flag for antennae

Personal items for your kit:

  • Hats, mittens, coats
  • Spare socks and snow pants
  • Snow boots
  • First Aid Kit
  • Bottled water
  • Snack foods, such as:
    • Granola Bars
    • Crackers
    • Chocolate bars
    • Dried fruits
    • Nuts
  • Lighter
  • Coffee can
  • Paper towels
  • Multi-tool
  • Prescription drugs
  • Hand warmers
  • A good book

You may want to keep the winter survival kit in the passenger compartment of the car in case you can’t access the truck, say, you go into the ditch.
